Jun 15th, 2019

Even after visiting Epe Mangroves 5 times, I still can’t get enough of the beautiful natural attraction. Located in Epe LGA in Lagos state, it is one of the hidden gems that best suit lovers of nature. The creek starts from Ajah extending all the way to Epe town. The mangroves home trees that grow swampy soil, animals such as monkeys, alligator and of course fish. The water at the mangrove is brownish but according to German scientists, it is pure and safe to drink.

In this article, I will be sharing 5 tips every first timer should know before making a trip to Epe mangroves.

VISIT IN THE MORNING

I’m sure nobody wants to go on a canoe ride when the sun is out and really hot. Nah! The best time to visit the mangroves is in the morning when the sun is still not out. The weather would still be cool and calm so you can enjoy the ride. Riding when the sun is out may not be too comfortable for you.

SELECT THE RIGHT FOOTWEAR

Epe mangroves is a really swampy area naturally, now imagine when it rains, it gets really messy. So you will need to consider the type of footwear you put on. If you do not mind the water entering your legs, then a sandal would be perfect for you. If not, then you can make do with a sneakers – but not a low sneakers as the water can still penetrate into your shoes. I’ll advice you put on something little bit high so water doesn’t get to your feet.

DO NOT FORGET YOUR CAMERA

It is such a beautiful scenery at the mangroves and you would really love to capture the moment. Trust me, you won’t get tired of taking amazing shots. Even if you do not have a camera, your phone should suffice.

KNOW WHAT THE WEATHER SAYS BEFORE YOU VISIT

It is not best to visit the mangroves on a day likely to rain. The canoe ride across the mangroves is an outdoor thing so there is no way to can get a shield when the rain starts.

PLAN TO ENGAGE IN A FUN ACTIVITY

A return ride across the mangroves takes about 30-45 minutes and it may not be nice driving down that distance from the city and end up doing just the ride. You should plan to do something in between the ride (after the first trip, before heading  back). We usually suggest Adire experience which is a good craft to engage in.

Of course cash is a must to go with. It will cost you N4,000 for the ride and life jacket. You may also want to tip the little kids hailing you,

There you have the top tips to note before visiting the mangroves. If nature is what interests you, then you should visit the mangroves at least once.
